4th Alarm+ Newport, RI 5/23/22

151 Admiral Kalbfus Rd

Just after 2000 hours on 5/23/22, Newport, RI firefighters arrived to find a fire in a wing of the Wayfarer Inn, a large hotel that consisted of several buildings. The fire was in a 2-1/2 story section approximately 150×75 located immediately adjacent to the main building, a 150×100 4 story structure. The fire was located about 40 minutes away from me and I started in. While en-route radio traffic indicated that an agressive interior attack was underway with truck companies performing trench cuts. During the interior attack, companies encountered a floor collapse on floor two and were forced to back out. Engine 5 reported they were missing a firefighter and a Personnel Accountability Report was conducted. After a few tense moments, the missing firefighter was accounted for. All companies were pulled out of the building and a defensive posture with multiple ladder pipes and master streams was undertaken. As I approached Newport on the Pell Newport Bridge, heavy fire could be seen from 2 miles away with flames reaching 40-50 feet in the air. The fire eventually extended into the main building and special calls for additional engines and tankers were made above the 4th alarm
